Always thought-provoking! There is a sign on my mirror, a quote from Emerson, “Insist on yourself, never imitate.” I substitute the word trust for insist.

For many years I had a photo from a fashion magazine hanging in my studio that was 3 young women beautifully dressed in 1930s gowns. The looks on their faces were forbidding. I named them collectively as DeeDee, doubt, disdain and don’t even think about it!

LOL I love that Kate! "Doubt, Distain, and Don't even think about it!" The three horsewomen of creative freeze. And Emerson really knew some things, huh? His "insist on yourself" is very akin to Lamott's "be militantly on your own side." It feels like a lifelong practice to keep returning to your own side - but so foundational. Thanks for sharing your practices of trust!

Hi Sara - Great post! thank you so much for writing and sharing! So timely for me as I am continuing creating my work 'portfolio' - and one of the decisions I did make based on my intuition and against my doubt and fear around was my hiring a business coach back in January. Early on in our weeks together, she encouraged me to start thinking of our time together as a graduate level course which helped me embrace it as education versus 'how to make money now!!!' panic mode. Your article is like 'icing' on the top of this cake I've been deeply immersed in making! Thanks again soooo much!

Hi Cherri! I'm so happy to hear that this post resonated with you! Congratulations on hiring your coach and having the courage to explore a course on business. I completely relate to how "panic mode" can shut down your ability to hear your intuition or anything else! I fully trust that your business will take you everywhere you most want to go next. Here's to both of our post-CPS chapters!
